The Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy, is leading the charge in prioritizing the judicious utilization of public funds within the Federal Government. This aligns with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s policy thrust on Renewed Hope and economic growth.

During a recent meeting with the top management of her Ministry, Barr Uju emphasized the need to rebuild the confidence of Nigerian women, promote economic empowerment, ensure inclusiveness in governance, and improve the general wellbeing of the Girl Child. However, despite continuous efforts by the Federal Government, poverty still persists due to the inefficient use of allocated funds.

Barr Uju urged the Ministry’s management to embrace transparency and accountability, considering these virtues as crucial elements of the Nigerian project aimed at improving the lives of women and children. She emphasized the interconnectedness of their work and its impact on immediate family members, highlighting that by efficiently carrying out their duties, they contribute to enhancing the welfare of their loved ones.

Additionally, the Minister expressed her commitment to addressing the issue of genital mutilation, an act that violates the rights of women. Supported by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Barr Uju plans to spearhead a comprehensive sensitization campaign to educate Nigerians about the importance of eradicating this harmful practice. Furthermore, she intends to establish Mobile Courts to rigorously prosecute offenders and ensure justice prevails.

Receiving commendation for her proposed road map towards improving the status of Nigerian women, Barr Uju was praised by Dr. Asabe Bashir, the Director-General of the Maryam Babangida Women Development Centre. Dr. Bashir assured the Minister of the unwavering dedication of the management and staff of the Ministry in contributing their quota towards achieving the set goals.

Empowering Nigerian Women Through Economic Inclusion

Economic empowerment plays a pivotal role in bolstering the status of women in society and eradicating long-standing disparities. The Women Affairs Ministry, under Barr Uju’s guidance, has made economic inclusion a priority. By providing women with access to entrepreneurial opportunities, vocational training, and skill development programs, the Ministry aims to equip them with the tools needed to succeed in a competitive world. Through these initiatives, women can cultivate their capabilities, contribute to the nation’s economic growth, and become financially independent, thus breaking the cycle of poverty that has persisted for far too long.

Enhancing Gender-Inclusive Governance

Alongside economic empowerment, the Ministry strives to enhance the participation of women in governance. Despite progress over the years, women’s representation in decision-making processes remains disproportionately low. By advocating for gender-inclusive governance, Barr Uju seeks to create an environment where women have an equal voice in shaping policies and driving impactful change. Through mentorship programs, leadership training, and awareness campaigns, the Ministry empowers women to take their rightful place in governance structures, ensuring their perspectives and experiences are adequately represented.

Promoting the Wellbeing of the Girl Child

The importance of safeguarding the wellbeing of the Girl Child cannot be overstated. The Women Affairs Ministry led by Barr. Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye recognizes the need for comprehensive initiatives that address the specific challenges faced by young girls in Nigerian society. By focusing on access to quality education, healthcare services, and protection from all forms of exploitation, the Ministry aims to create a favorable environment for the holistic development of the Girl Child. Through strong collaboration with education and health sectors, Barr Uju is committed to bridging existing gaps and ensuring that no girl is left behind.

Roadmap to Eradicating Genital Mutilation

One of the most pressing issues affecting women in Nigeria is genital mutilation. Recognizing the physical and psychological consequences of this harmful practice, Barr Uju has taken a definitive stance against it. With the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Women Affairs Ministry will launch an extensive sensitization campaign to raise awareness about the adverse effects of genital mutilation. By engaging communities, religious leaders, and individuals, the Ministry aims to foster a collective commitment to eradicate this practice and safeguard the rights and dignity of Nigerian women.

Under the able leadership of Barr Uju Kennedy, the Women Affairs Ministry in Nigeria is intensifying its efforts to ensure the judicious utilization of public funds, thereby promoting economic empowerment, gender-inclusive governance, and the wellbeing of women and children. By prioritizing these crucial aspects, the Ministry aims to create a society where every Nigerian woman can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development. With the collective commitment of the Ministry’s management and staff, supported by the broader Nigerian community, we can make significant strides towards building a more equitable and prosperous nation.
